WRITING PROGRAM ADMINISTRATION

STEM Writing in the Disciplines Fellow, Biochemistry and Molec. Biology Department, University of Massachusetts Amherst, 2016-Present

  • Piloted the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Writing Fellow program from the ground up, including producing professional documents for Fellows’ workflow and projected pedagogical goals
  • Support biochemistry faculty members in teaching multiple writing-intensive BMB courses by editing and sequencing assignments
  • Plan and teach workshops, grade and give revision feedback; tutor students on writing assignments
  • Help writing pedagogy for STEM communication and correspond with faculty and department chair throughout and between semesters
  • Create Writing Fellow Program self-assessment tools and evaluation documents to chairs and faculty every year
  • Develop professional documents with BMB undergraduates for their Culminating Portfolios (including grants, cover letters, and CVs); lead workshops on public speaking and presenting at academic conferences; help students develop their Honors Thesis “Elevator Talks”

  • Wrote a grant with the Writing Center Director to pilot a Writing Fellows program in a 6-week summer course in the Political Science department, designed specifically to support the mostly-international first-year student enrollment of the class.
  • Worked with PolSci111 instructor to mesh theory/history content module with writing development module
  • Advised instructor on syllabus and assignment modifications
  • Collaborated with instructor on teaching methods best suited for the course.

Assistant Director of Writing Center, University of Massachusetts Amherst, 2014-2016

  • Assisted the Director in supervising staff of 40-50 undergraduate and graduate writing tutors;
  • Trained 18 tutor-interns: evaluated tutors during semester observations; planned and led staff meetings and development workshops;
  • Led inquiry-based professional development groups on topics like multilingual writing, reflective tutoring, and race and racism in the Writing Center
  • Created staff schedule and manage shift changes, maintained payroll records; assessed writing center evaluation data for long-term planning and staff development; represented Writing Center at campus events
  • Tutored campus students and faculty; consulted with faculty and TAs on teaching with writing (designing & sequencing assignments, giving feedback), and collaborated with the Graduate School and the Institute for Teaching Excellence and Faculty Development to create and lead workshops
